After years and years of fantasy Google searches, overheard backpacker anecdotes and folded down pages in travel mags I can finally say that I am off to Berlin!
Berlin has been on the top of my must-see travel destinations for a long time now after hearing nothing but praise and crazy tales about this hipster hangout. It seems like Berlin has surged in popularity among us students with many jetting off to explore the city’s historic and quirky streets. Its mix of mental nightlife (stories of ‘scat parties’ and sex dungeons seem common), complicated history and its emergence as the new Art Capital have put Berlin firmly on the backpacker map.
I must admit that I am one of those travellers who have neglected Europe due to the ‘I-can-go-there-anytime’ attitude that too many of us Brits have. I naively thought that Europe didn’t have as much travelling-clout as other exotic, long-haul destinations. However, after my trips to Brussels and Amsterdam last summer I vowed to change that mentality as I realised just how much I was missing out on.
What better excuse than a birthday to raise funds for a trip such as this? By forsaking presents I managed to convince my parents to treat me and my boyfriend to flights and my boyfriend subsequently offered to pay for the accommodation when we got there. Perfect! We managed to secure return flights for just £50 each, flying with Easyjet from London Gatwick. Our friend then told us about a really cheap and excellently located hotel used by Easyjet called EasyHotel (http://www.easyhotel-berlin.de/). From just 40 Euros a night for a double room, this seemed like the best choice. We had been looking for an apartment but were unable to find one so cheap.
We will be leaving on 29th May for three nights so keep an eye out for the upcoming ‘Best of Berlin’ post. Drop me a comment to let me know what your favorite Berlin hang-out is!
